Our software vendor has just updated their Threat Advisory on W32/Dumaru.y@MM. We have not seen this virus yet on campus, but the dat file just came out and is available on our local server, [edited out 'cause y'all probably aren't at UIUC and therefore won't be able to connect to it] and on NAI's update sites.

Similar to last week's bagle virus, this virus installs it's own SMTP engine and sends email out to addresses harvested from the computer. A keylogger is also installed and is used to steal data from the victim's computer. The attachment is called MYPHOTO.JPG. (many spaces) .EXE.

CITES Security requests that you update your dat files today. The combination of new dat file and virus on the loose is what usually causes a virus like this to hit us hard.

As you can see, a new variant of our friend mydoom (now called
mydoom.a and mydoom.b) has been discovered.

We have not seen any of this make it way onto campus yet but this
one, again, is particularly nasty as it disables the computer's
ability to contact NAI [a major antivirus vendor's update location].

They new dat to catch this virus is available via our local site and NAI's update sites.

MyDoom has crashed some computers at my university so it's no joke, I know that much. My linguistics teacher mentioned it in class.

All users please be advised: Virus Alert

IT Tech Services has advised TEL Admin of the mass-emailer virus called MyDoom.

The MyDoom virus arrives in the form of an attachment, usually with the extension .zip
Because of this, until further notice, all emails containing attachments ending with the extension .zip will be blocked from being sent to their intended recipients on TEL.

As well, any email containing the following words in the Subject line will also be blocked:

error
status
server report
mail transaction failed
mail delivery system
hello
hi
test
Undeliverable: test

Because the MyDoom virus is "smart" enough to add new words to the subject line, we may be forced to block additional key words in the future.
We will inform all TEL users if/when additional subject line words or file attachment extensions are to be blocked.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this action may cause.

Very very simple-
1. Run Windows Update at least once a week
2. Have a virus protection pragram running in the background
3. Don't panic
